Sleeve or Bypass????
Hey Ya'll,
I'm sorry that it has been so long since I last posted. But so much has been happening!! Both good, and scary. More on that later....This will be a really short post. I just wanted to say that I am still here, and that I am considering a major change in my weight loss attempts. I have been thinking long and hard, and I am positive that I will be having either the Sleeve or Bypass done by the end of the year if all goes as planned!!
So calling all Sleeve and Bypass bloggers. If you could give me your story and recommendation, I would greatly appreciate it!! I have an appointment with my Bariatric Surgeon on Sept 12th to discuss my options and determine what I will have. So if I could hear from you asap, I would be forever thankful!!
I will go for now, but I will be posting again real soon!! Till next time....
Aloha My Friends :)

I am having my LapBand removed Monday and I am revising to the bypass. The reasons why I chose the bypass over the sleeve is because I have well over 100 more pounds to lose and the sleeve hasn't been around long enough for my peace of mind. The sleeve works better than the LapBand but for someone with a higher BMI, like me... It may not help me get all the way to goal, or even close. If you have 100 pounds or less to lose... Go with the sleeve if you are comfortable with that, you will not have the mal-absorption so your vitamin regiment will be less. The problems with the sleeve that I have heard of are basically bursting the pouch, and infections at the long cut where 90% of your stomach is removed.
DiZneDiVa - I am really sorry to hear that you are having to revise as well!! I will be thinking of you Monday, and following your progress. Especially since it will be what I am to expect!!
I really appreciate the information that you gave, and your reasoning behind it as well!!
Right now I have about 80 lbs to lose, but by the time of Surgery later in the year, it could very well be up to 90 lbs!
I am a grazer and a binge eater. But I do not purge when I binge eat, so I gain weight fast!
When I went in for my initial Surgeon appointment for my Lap Band, he tried to talk me into the Bypass when he heard what kind of eater that I am.
He said that very few eaters like me are successful long term with the Lap Band. He said that the Bypass was what I needed. But my Family Dr talked me out of it, basically scaring the hell out of me!
So I will be interested to see what he feels now that the Sleeve is an option. Whether he will feel that the Bypass will still be my best bet. But I am definitely leaning towards the Bypass as well....
One of my Cousins had the Bypass on Oct 31, 2011. She was 321 lbs then and is now 201! She said that she would do the Surgery again, and advises me to do it as well.
Well, you can read all about the sleeve on my blog (and I know you have!) and of course I feel that I made the right decision for me. However, I will say that it takes a LOT of control because I could out-eat my sleeve VERY easily. There are lots of foods I COULD eat but DON'T because I don't want to undo all my hard work. So one time I heard my surgeon explain things like this: If you think you want the surgeon to do 20% of the work and you can do the rest (diet and exercise) then you are a good candidate for the sleeve or band. If you want the surgeon to do 80% of the work, then choose the bypass.
Good luck to you in whatever you decide to do, I'm here for you either way! Hugs!
Whichever you chose we will be here to support you...
Thank you Kelli!! I knew that my Bandster friends would be supportive!
I had the Sleeve on December 20, 2010.
In the beginning I was originally going for the LapBand. My mom had the band, I spent HOURS upon HOURS researching it, felt comfortable blah blah blah. But, then after talking with my nutritionist I decided to go with something else.
To be honest I know NOTHING about the Bypass. I never really researched it. I was nervous.
The sleeve was a GREAT option for me. And, it's helped me lose over 160 pounds. Currently I am just 8 pounds shy away from my goal weight of 150. I've LOST more then I weigh! What the WHAT?!
I think either option will work for you. I'd talk with your doctor and see what he'd suggest because they sometimes have great insight on the different surgeries. I know some people have to go bypass because of health issues....
Either way GOOD LUCK!
If you want to talk about the sleeve, I'll leave you my email address and you can email me any time! I'm pretty open about all of this!

Thanks Jes! I am so glad that the Sleeve worked for you. And after learning about it, at first I thought that it would be a good option for me too. But after researching it and talking with a few who are Sleeved, I believe that I would abuse it (meaning that I would work around it and gain weight anyway). So I think that the Bypass is my only option!
